ramblings, musings, mumblings

Things just happen so suddenly. And not just to me.

Like for example, Holland’s Euro 2008 ambitions were fulled to such an extent by their awesome group-stage performances, that the fall back to ground zero – as represented by their 1-3 rout at the hands of Russia – must have been a long, torturous one.

As for the matters that are of greater relevance to me, I haven’t completed any holiday homework, done any school-related packing and whatnot, and I still have not switched into ’school mode’. You know, the mode in which us human beings suddenly and surely become reactive instead of proactive, by letting the events around them determine how they behave, rather than actually seeking out their own schedules and events. I suppose ’school mode’ could be applied to other areas besides school itself, but fact remains that – especially during this period – such ostensibly weird behaviour is part and parcel of school life.

Sometimes I wonder how I would change the Singapore education system to suit my liking, if that were even possible. Empirical observation has told me that almost everyone is accustomed to their two-day weekends, twice-a-year holiday periods and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (or as varies) school timeframes. However, said observation has also told me that nearly everyone seems to be dissatisfied with their situations. So I’d like to put forth my take on this matter.

I propose three-day weekends (i.e. break days are Friday to Sunday), one gigantic holiday break instead of two medium-sized holiday breaks and slightly longer school hours, countered by longer recess breaks. Thus, we’d have holiday period from something like August to December, and all curriculum time jammed into the first seven months of each calendar year. That would mean having to abolish end-of-year exams, which in my eyes would be excellent. Then again, wishes will be wishes.
